Information About The English Literature CLEP Exam

Once you’ve decided to earn your English Literature credit by taking the English Literature CLEP exams, you’ll want to study so you can make the best possible score. Here’s a glance at what you’re in for when your CLEP test day arrives.

There are 95 multiple choice questions on the English Literature CLEP test and they cover several topics in the broad area of English Literature. You have to finish the test within ninety minutes. Here’s a breakdown of the areas the test covers:

  • Literary environment, major authors, metrical patterns, literary characters, and terms (35-40% of the CLEP exam)
  • Be able to analyze elements of form, derive meanings, detect tone and mood; grasp patterns of imagery, categorize characteristics of style, and understand the reasoning behind an excerpt of literary criticism (60-65% of the CLEP exam)

The English Literature CLEP test also has an optional essay portion that some schools do require students to take, and pass, as well. If you’re required to write the essay, it will be graded by the school. In the optional essay section you’re required to write about two different themes and you’ll have another 90 minutes to complete this section.

When you finish the CLEP test, you’ll receive your unofficial score. Your score will be between 20 and 80 and in order to pass get the CLEP credit, you must get at least a 50.

Remember, on the CLEP exam there’s no difference between an answer that’s been left blank and an incorrect answer, so if you’re not sure of an answer, you should at least guess because you may just get it right.

If you achieve the score you need to pass the CLEP test you’ll get CLEP credit without having to take the course.
